    Don’t Accept Less

    Proverbs 15:13(NLT) says, “A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.” It’s a pretty well-known fact that joy, contentment, and happiness can add tremendously to our lives. When we’re happy and content, those in the medical profession tell us that it can even improve our physical health. There’s a glow about us when we feel all is well with our worlds, and this is magnified exponentially when we’ve found that special one. When our significant relationships are going well, and things are progressing in a very pleasing way, we are in our happy zone like never before. We wear a smile as bright as the prettiest ornament on a Christmas tree. But when the ‘boo’ is not as pleasing as he once was, or he’s missing in action, that happy face turns upside down, and we forget about what it is to have a glad heart. We have to know that this isn’t what God wants for us.

    When you are dating a man that isn’t yet your husband, and he hasn’t given you an indication that he wants to be, you must be careful about how you invest in this relationship. Contrary to what the world and society want people to think, a boyfriend is just that. He’s a male that is your friend. That “male-friend” status should not give him a suggestion or assumption that he can assume the rights of a husband, but not the responsibility. The only one that can make this distinction clear to him is you.

    I attended an event with a friend at her request. The man she’s been dating on-and-off for years changed his mind at the last moment and would not accompany her. Many of us can relate to her disappointment. Often, she has envisioned him publicly demonstrating his commitment to her as they walk together arm in arm, but continually she is disappointed. Does he have someone else? This is the question so many of us deny and excuse away. We refuse to accept that we’re being deceived and perhaps used, and we continue to accept the man’s behavior.

    As women, we know what it feels like to be truly appreciated and valued. We understand that when a man has good intentions towards a relationship with us, he will make himself available to spend quality time in our company. He’ll make us feel special and that we’re one of the most important people in his life. Most of us go out of our way to make the significant male-friend in our lives feel that way, why would we accept less than we’re willing and capable of giving? We do ourselves a great disservice by behaving this way, because here’s the reality; if we’ll accept crumbs, crumbs are all we will get.

    It’s certainly plausible that a man that causes us to have a sad face and a broken heart more than he causes a happy face and joyful heart may be involved with someone else. Many women are in denial about this, and because they are closing their minds and hearts to the truth, there’s no opening for wisdom to get in. Most of us desire the opportunity to walk together with someone in a relationship that is blessed with the liberty of Christ, where there’s no mess and heavy baggage weighing it down. Well, how can we have this without the truth?

    Jesus Christ said in John 8:32(NLT), “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” We can’t have a relationship where Jesus Christ is the head without knowing God’s truth. God tells us in Proverbs 4:5 to get wisdom and develop good judgment. Good judgment is honoring ourselves as God’s beloved daughters who deserve His best. It’s not putting our heads in the sand and denying the fact that we’re allowing ourselves to want someone that doesn’t truly honor who we are. We’re being lied to and manipulated, and that is not God’s Will for any of His daughters.

    God’s Will for our lives is to give us a blessed future and an ever-expanding hope. He is full of mercy and grace, and He requires us to have faith in Him to present us with a man that will love us through the love of Christ. Some of us have been so bamboozled by counterfeits that we have forgotten what a good man is. Let’s go to God’s Word and be in prayer that Heavenly Father etches His Will upon our hearts and minds. We must not want less for ourselves than what He desires to give us. Wanting the best for your life is never about ego. It’s about trusting that the man God wants for you will inspire and uplift you, so that you can be all that God created you to be. If you’re confident you have the capacity and desire to do the same for him, don’t accept less.  ■

    When A Man Stands for Christ

    David was a beautiful baby boy who grew to be an incredibly handsome man. In his eyes, his good looks afforded him none of the perks that most of us assume. When he looked in the mirror, he didn’t see handsome, but rejection and sometimes anger. He was continuously bullied and made fun of for being slow in his earlier school years, so his Uncle Joe taught him how to box. By the time he was 11, he had already been expelled from grade school three times for fighting. One day, when he was sitting in detention, a sweet little girl walked up to him and asked if he knew Jesus. Up to that point, he didn’t, and even though he pretended to ignore her, the love in her heart had caused his to skip a beat, and he was never the same.

    It was something about that name, “Jesus”, and he played the question that the little girl had posed over and over in his young mind. Financially, things at home were tough, but there was lots of love in his family. His father passed away shortly after David was born, and his mother and grandmother raised him and his two other sisters. The other siblings were smart as a whip, and even though David wasn’t ‘book smart’ like them, he could take apart anything and put it back together better than it was.

    When his Uncle Joe went to prison, it tore David up inside. His mother could hardly work a week without getting a call from David’s school about all the fights he was getting into. Shortly after his 12th birthday, the school recommended he receive a battery of tests, including a cognitive assessment for ADHD. He didn’t quite understand what was happening at the time, but he saw the look on his mother’s and grandmother’s faces, and it scared him. He felt as if people outside his family were looking for a way to dispose of him the way they had done with his Uncle Joe.

    The night before he was to be tested, David panicked. He felt the burden of taking care of his family without his Uncle Joe and was terrified of being sent away. He laid awake in bed running all kinds of terrible scenarios in his mind, and he felt as if he were about to explode, but then something happened. Like oil being poured all over his body, a peace blanketed his entire being. He heard the words, “I have a plan for you, David, and everything is going to be alright.”

    The tests proved there were no cognitive issues with David and that he was highly sensitive and intuitive. This was partly because he was deaf in one ear and had never been properly diagnosed. When he returned home, he was changed. A door had been opened and he had a kind of confidence he had never known. He was given a special hearing aid, his grades improved, and he grew into a wonderfully empathetic and dutiful young man.

    His freshman year of college, after his 19th birthday, David gave his life to the Lord, and with a few of his other Christian friends, he took a vow of celibacy. He was extremely thankful for what God had done in his life, and the words the Spirit spoke to him when he was 12-years old were branded on his heart. He knows that God has a plan for his life, and he is determined to marry and have a family with a woman whose commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ mirrors his own. Almost seven years later, he had no idea how challenging it would be to find the right woman.

    When he met Yasmine, there was an instant connection and they seem to share a love of Christ, but Yasmine has not taken a vow of celibacy. The first time she tempted him to stumble, he told her, “Yasmine, I value my body temple as much as you should value yours.” She was offended and a little ashamed, but it would not be the last time they crossed that bridge. After a few months of seeing the strength of David’s commitment, Yasmine decided celibacy wasn’t for her and thought it was best if they parted as friends.

    Whether or not you believe it, there is a match for every person that exists. There’s someone in the world today that in some way equals your strengths, weaknesses, and commitment to God. In many ways, David is an absolute dream. He’s not perfect, but he’s committed to receive what God has planned for him. He believes the discipline and commitment that he has chosen to demonstrate at this time in his life will soon pay off in a great way; he’s very confident in this.

    Being in a relationship outside of marriage can present many challenges, this is why it’s so important to have a strong, made up mind about knowing how and when to say no if ever you’re in a situation that’s tempting. As women, we rarely think of a man standing for Christ the way David is. “Something must be wrong with him in that area.” We think. This shows us how far away from God’s standard we have moved. A simple but meaty truth is that our eyes will not be able to land on a person like David unless we’re a match. That may be an ‘ooch!’ for some, but it is very true.

    1 Corinthians 6:18(NLT), tells us, “Flee sexual immorality.  Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.” God makes it very plain that sexual intimacy with anyone that isn’t your spouse is a sin. He tells us to run from it because it harms us and most severely, it harms our relationship with Him. When we commit this sin, we sin against our own bodies, which means our own bodies will betray us. Like many of us, David has witnessed in the lives of his sisters and friends what happens to us spiritually when sex is taken outside the boundaries of God’s love. Often, in the relationship that we hoped would last, something is lost, and it cannot be regained.

    2Chronicles 16:9 tells us that the Lord searches the entire earth looking to strengthen those who have a heart that is fully committed to Him. Oh, how we’ve underestimated this verse. God is the One who has all power. He’s the One who blesses, not us. He puts the man and woman together. He strategically positions them so that they are in the right place at the right time. The magnet that draws them is their passion for Heavenly Father. We must be passionate about pleasing God. When we are, our faith is activated in a remarkable way.

    Sexual sin is the culprit of a kind of cynicism and darkness that has wrecked the blessed potential for significant relationships in the lives of many believers. The sweet fragrance of repentance and sacrifice does not emanate from them. It does not float up to heaven and out to others because they continue to allow the trap of sexual sin to hold their faith captive. Because so many are blinded by lust, most women can’t even imagine that such a man as David exists, that’s he’s living in the earth today and waiting for a woman who matches his commitment to Christ. Sadly, they can’t imagine it because they themselves will not be equal to it.

    We can’t be involved in the lust of this world because we represent Christ and the virtue of God should flow from our pores. 1Corinthians 6:20(NLT) states, “for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” God paid the price of our sin with the life of our beloved Savior’s sacrifice on the cross, and in gratitude for all Heavenly Father has done, we should want to keep ourselves spiritually pure before Him. This is David’s heart, and it should be ours as well. God has visions of radiance for our body temples. He has visions of grandeur for them, because they were created to house His divine glory. By this we should realize that changing the way we think, behave, and treat our bodies makes a statement for all eternity. It will either open doors of beautiful possibilities or keep them closed. It’s all up to us. ■

    God Won’t Keep A Good Thing from You

    Psalm 84:11(NLT)
    For the Lord God is our sun and our shield.  He gives us grace and glory.  The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.”

    So, your boyfriend has told you that he wants to take a break, and you’re looking at him like, “Have you lost your mind?!!!” You’ve been together for two years, invested your affection, time, and resources, and he has decided that it’s not working for him. You want an explanation, right. You want to know why he allowed you to think that everything was hunky dory, and that the possibility of marriage might be somewhere down the road. You want to know why he kept taking everything you offered and never once hinted that it wasn’t enough for him or that he wasn’t happy. This man looked you in the eye and said that he needed to be out of your presence and away from your life, and he can’t even tell you exactly why.

    This is hurt, frustration, anger, insecurity, and bewilderment all rolled into one. Added to this is the curiosity about what’s really going on with him. Were you duped and didn’t have a clue? Were you completely unaware of who this man really is? The questions are endless, and most of us will spend an enormous amount of time racking our brains about it. We do this because rejection knocks the wind out of our sails. It batters our self-esteem and makes us insecure about the choices and decisions we make.

    When something like this occurs, we might question God and ask Him what in the world happened. We thought this man was a keeper, and we could visualize spending our lives together. We thought things were going to work out and never saw the ask for a break coming. Well, there’s a saying that we shouldn’t cry over spilled milk. The milk is on the floor, no longer drinkable, and crying will not reverse the outcome. We know this on the surface, but we’re emotional creatures. Crying over relationship issues is a common response. However, we must be confident that crying about it isn’t the only response.

    We should give ourselves a short window to cry our eyes out over the relationship gone wrong, but we should also put a time limit on those tears. We most move from crying over spilled milk to formulating a plan to elevate ourselves spiritually and increase our faith.

    When things don’t go right for our lives, we cry out to the Lord because we know that something is wrong. We seek Him because we’re stressed, and we don’t know how things got out of alignment. In the Old Testament, this is the situation God’s people were in when they began to cry out to Him for help. Their hearts were not with God, but they still went through the motions of worship. He was not pleased, so the release they expected didn’t materialize. God rejected their offerings and worship. He rejected their praise, and in Malachi 2:14-15(NLT), He told the men, “14 You cry out, “Why doesn’t the LORD accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! Because the LORD witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows. 15 Didn’t the LORD make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.”

    The lives of God’s people got away from them because they failed to guard their hearts. This is a powerful lesson for those of us living today. To guard your heart is to make sure your faith in God remains strong. Then unexpected situations of disappointment and heartache will not leave you with the emotional instability of anxiety. You will not allow the impulses of panic and obsession to make you do things you know you shouldn’t do.

    Philippians 4:6-7(ESV) states, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” To be anxious is to be overwhelmed by fears and insecurities. Anxiety is a refusal to be at peace about situations we can’t control. It can be gut-wrenching and overwhelming, and it also shows us the areas in our lives where we are not allowing God’s love to rule. He tells us not to be anxious. This is a direct commandment. Instead, we are to pray to Him in faith, with thanksgiving.

    Faith and gratitude to God is the strategy that He has given us for successful living. And the faith and gratitude that He has outlined in Philippians 4:6-7 is the appropriate response to disappointment, heartbreak, and any other adversity we face. Heavenly Father instructs us to tell Him what our needs are, and to do so with faith and gratitude in our hearts. When we do this, His peace will overcome our anxieties and comfort our hearts and minds.

    Relationship mistakes and the outcomes they bring are notoriously hurtful. They can set us back in many ways, but this will not happen if we strive to increase our faith in God. We must place more effort in trusting our Heavenly Father than we do in our feelings and thoughts of abandonment and despair. The root of our heartache and disappointment is a fear that we may not ever receive the kind of relationship we desire. Our Heavenly Father allowed this fear to be exposed so that we can see it for what it is and overcome it. God will not keep a good thing from you. He will help you to grow in His love so that you recognize the blessing He sends, and most importantly, so that you continue to keep your relationship with Him the greatest priority of your life.■

    Balancing Your Needs with God’s Requirements

    Life will give you what you give it. This is the lesson many mature believing women have learned throughout their spiritual journeys in Christ. Our Lord and Master tells us in Luke 6:38(NLT), “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” He is teaching a very important and immutable law regarding the way in which Heavenly Father has setup the universe to operate. It is a law that works for the positive actions, energy, attitude, and deeds we put out there, and the negative as well. This Law of Giving and Receiving will never fail. It cannot be broken or altered. If we take a sinful or negative thought and allow it to manifest into a sinful action, it is going to have an impact on our lives, and we will not like it. Even those who do not know Jesus Christ in the pardon of their sins understand this law.

    The Law of Giving and Receiving is packed with God’s unparalleled intelligence, grace, power, and goodness. It’s a law that forces us to humble ourselves, because we can’t come before God with excuses about our level of giving. We can’t convince Him that we’ve been amazingly Godly in our actions and deeds when we haven’t. Proverbs 24:12(NLT) cuts it down like this, “Don’t excuse yourself by saying, “Look, we didn’t know.” For God understands all hearts, and he sees you. He who guards your soul knows you knew. He will repay all people as their actions deserve.”

    The old nature is the nature we had before we came to Christ. It’s a nature that God calls His enemy, because it goes against His Word. It is a nature consumed with selfishness, pride, indulgence, revenge, pettiness, and all manner of darkness. Rebellion is the oil in the old nature’s engine, and many of us still have it in our hearts and minds. We don’t want to be disciplined or to do what God says if it interferes with what we like and want. And we convince ourselves that we are justified in our actions. Some think God’s forgiveness means that we can continue doing wrong and He’ll give us a pass, that there won’t be a price to pay for not lining up with His Word. Even an unlearned parent teaches their children that although bad behavior is forgiven, it has a cost. Heavenly Father has set up the entire universe to be friendly to those that obey Him, so we can avoid the consequence of wrong action through obedience to God’s Word.

    A woman said to me once, “God knows my heart, He knows that I have needs and if I ask Him to forgive me, He will.” How many women have thought this to themselves? Tons, I bet. As believers, we can’t presume to tell God we have needs and then not have faith in Him to take care of them. And we certainly can’t call sin a need. He tells us in His Word that He is our Provider and Protector. Philippians 4:19(NLT), states “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” God is our Source, Sufficiency, and Supplier. So, if we go off on our own, and decide we’re going to take care of our own needs, what does this say about our faith in God? For many, therein lies the issue. They are not really trusting Heavenly Father for all things.

    We must come to grips with the truth, because if we’re believing a lie, that’s not going to give us a foundation for marriage and the kind of life we want. As women of God, we feel pressure to try and balance our needs and the man’s needs, and still be Godly. We can’t start from that position because it isn’t a winning one. Jesus Christ tells us to seek GOD first. He must always be first with us. So, we must start our significant relationships, or any other thing we attempt to do, by putting God’s requirements in the top spot, and then everything else will fall in line.

    We are not robots, and yes, we have needs, but God is our Creator. Sometimes what we think is a need is a temptation from the devil. We’ve given in to it so many times that now we have developed a pattern of listening to our flesh rather than listening to and honoring God. None of us have what it takes to balance our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical needs. Only God can do this. Philippians 2:13(NLT) declares, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”

    Our responsibility is to let God be at work by being committed to do what He says in His Word. Most of us have done things our way and indulged ourselves whenever we have had opportunity. We have been rebellious in certain areas of our lives for a long while now. It’s time to make a change. Our actions and intentions should be focused on building and strengthening our relationship with the Lord.  We need to be conscious about what we’re doing and only put things out there that please Heavenly Father. When this is our main intention and motivation, we will receive the bounty and abundance that are tied to living and loving through Jesus Christ.

    More Than What You Asked for

    A close sister in Christ was very upset when she told me the man that she’s been dating over a year informed her he wanted to take a break. Immediately my heart went out to her, because I know oh too well the heartbreaking emotions she’s going through. Many of us have been blindsided this way, and you feel as though your love and the energy you put in the relationship was taken for granted. You might even begin to question your decision-making when it comes to relationships with men. Hearing the pain in my sister-friend’s voice brought back memories I’d rather forget. Personally, I told the Lord that if it means having to deal with something like this in my life, I’m completely okay with it just being Him and me. I know from experience that when we make our relationship with God our number one priority, we can avoid painful breakups with a person that was never intended for us in the first place.

    Heavenly Father wants all who desire marriage to have a beautiful union that is anchored in the Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, it is God’s Will for us to have a strong marriage with a good spouse if that is what we desire. He will take care of all the details of this blessing if we trust and honor Him. We must wait upon the Lord in all things. When we don’t do this, and we try to rush things, we can become attached to someone who doesn’t have the same desire for marriage as we might, and this can be devastating. And I also know that such attachments become a significant hindrance when the desire and motivation to make God the central focus of your life isn’t a priority.

    The psalmist said in Psalm 139:24(NLT), Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” This is the heart that I always want to have for God and His Word. A person has to take some knocks in life sometimes before they will understand that without God, nothing works. We can’t do anything without Him, and He demands to be first in our lives, because He cannot ever be second in anything. He’s the One True God, Alpha and Omega. He’s all-powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere present. Everything we do in life must indicate we understand who He is, and everything we do must signal heaven and everything beneath it that we are humbled before our Almighty God.

    Jesus Christ commands us in Matthew 6:33(NLT),Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” This is more than a commandment; it is the foundation upon which anything that we desire to last in life must be built. Healing begins and newness is ushered into a person’s life when they can acknowledge they’ve not been as faithful to God as they should. Then they can take the necessary actions to remedy this, but we can’t keep doing the same things and expect a different result.

    In 1Kings 3:9(NLT), it is evident that King Solomon had a heart to put God first when he asked Heavenly Father, Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” This pleased God very much, because the humility to seek Him and to serve righteously was apparent in Solomon. God replied in 1Kings 3:11-13(NLT), “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life!” This passage demonstrates for us the way in which God blesses when we seek Him and His righteousness first.

    Our hiccups and mistakes teach us righteousness. God does not cause them, but in order for us to usher in His grace and restoration, we must do as the psalmist said and ask Him to point out anything that offends Him in our lives. It is a very common and evil plot of the devil to weaponize relationships against us. Although it can be troubling to admit to ourselves, we provide the devil the ammunition he is looking for. As we spiritually mature, we learn from experience that the devil gets in where there’s an opening. We would do well to remain prayerful and humble before the Father so He can help us through His Holy Spirit to close that opening. The thing to do is to not close our eyes to it, because if we do, we will be outsmarted.

    I’ve mentioned often that I’ve heard many women ask the question “How much longer is God going to take before I meet my husband?”  It’s a question that all of us can understand and sympathize with, especially for women who’ve prayed a long time and are still unmarried. It’s probably one of the most frustrating areas in a single woman’s life. But there’s no secret to this. God must be first in our hearts and minds. There is no compromising on this standard. It’s a must. So, we have to ask if we’ve put the energy, effort, and focus in our relationship with God that we’ve put in our pursuit of a relationship with a man. The right answer lies in the reality that we should always invest more in our relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ than we do in any other. He tells His people in Jeremiah 29:11-14(NLT), “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “11 They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. 14 I will be found by you,” says the LORD.” This is true for those of us living today.

    The man that my friend was dating may have faked his commitment to her and led her to believe he was all in when he wasn’t. We’ve seen how hurtful and disappointing it is when we are treated this way. When it comes to God, we must make absolutely sure that we never attempt to do this to Him. He must have first place in our lives, and when He does, we will know it, because He will give us more than what we asked for. ■

    Thrilled About Your Faith in God

    Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, and it is the evidence of things not seen. Even though you and I can’t reach out and physically touch faith, our faith is all the evidence we need. It’s the title deed to the thing we’ve prayed to receive. Even though that thing hasn’t yet materialized in the natural realm, it’s ours if we trust the Lord and move according to what He’s told us. In other words, faith is the assurance that the thing we’ve prayed to God to receive in the name of Jesus Christ is on its way. Supernaturally, we’ve received it in Christ, and Ephesians 1:3 tells us so. In this verse, God declares that we’ve been blessed with ALL spiritual blessings in heavenly places because of our union with Christ. We can see from God’s Word that faith is a very powerful spiritual reality, and God has given it to every person. Faith in Jesus Christ should inspire every single or unmarried woman to wake up each day with the hope that even though she’s single in status, it is only temporary because she has faith in God.

    Faith is confidence, and confidence will require our minds and hearts to work together. God instructs us repeatedly in His Word to renew our minds and to guard our hearts. He created us in such a way that we have three parts, a human-spirit, a human-soul, and a human-body. Our human-spirit is the highest part of us because it is the part that allows us to connect to God. God is a Spirit, and we commune with Him spirit-u-ally. We must worship Him in spirit and in truth. 1Corinthians 6:19-20(NLT) tells us, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” The thing that we sometimes overlook is that faith requires that our souls and bodies submit to our born-again human spirit. Our human-spirit is the dwelling place of the gift of Holy Spirit. He, the Holy Spirit, lives inside our human-spirit, and the two are in continual fellowship and communion.

    Romans 8:16(NLT) says, “For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” The Spirit is doing a work on the inside of us. Our flesh is unclean and sinful but our human-spirit was recreated when we became born again. The born-again human-spirit is perfect, and this is the part of us that helps us receive from the Holy Spirit and walk in his power. The best thing we can do during some part of our day is shut off all the other noises, get quiet, and stay our minds on Jesus Christ. Our days can be very hectic, and we sometimes get out of sorts, but this doesn’t happen with the born-again human-spirit. It is completely submitted to the Holy Spirit, and it is our responsibility to submit our bodies to the will of our human-spirits and not to the will of the soul, which only wants to pleasure the flesh.

    Exercising the faith muscle is like exercising the physical body. The mind must be in agreement with the human-will and the human-body in order to actually begin a workout and see results. Faith is a potent reality. The spirit, soul, and body must all be on board to access the power of the Holy Spirit. Faith is the Spirit’s fruit, and everything about us must be in harmony with him, the Spirit; for this is the only way to be in harmony with God’s Word and to see our faith produce results!

    This is the pattern Jesus Christ left for us. He said in John 8:29(NLT) And the one who sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.” Jesus Christ never did anything that did not please the Father. Jesus walked in the Spirit every second of every day. He was in constant communion with God through the Holy Spirit. We must be as well. We desperately need the Spirit’s help to lead a successful Christian life. Just as Jesus started his days with prayer and submitting to the Holy Spirit, we must do the same thing.

    James 2:26(NLT) says, “Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.” Many single or unmarried women who are desiring to be married have read this verse and believed that they’ve got to go out and start doing all kinds of new things to get a man. They sign up for dating sites, change their hair style or hair color, buy a new wardrobe, or buy a new car. They do all these things thinking this will draw the blessing they desire. They believe these things will equate to the ‘good works’ that James 2:26 is referring to. Then, when things don’t work out as they had hoped, they are perplexed and saddened, thinking nothing works.

    Faith is a supernatural substance. It is spiritual, and it requires us to respond to God spiritually through the example of Christ. Romans 10:17 cosigns this by telling us that faith comes by hearing/perceiving the Word of God. We’ve got to hear God’s Word, believe it, then do what it says. This is a spiritual action that signifies we believe what the Lord has told us. Before a person believes in faith for marriage, they must believe in faith to hear God on the matter. That just makes sense.

    Faith is spiritual. It belongs to God. If we expect to see the results of our faith to any degree, we must ask the Owner of it to direct us. Jesus Christ didn’t do anything without hearing from God first. As a single/unmarried person, you can’t do anything without hearing from God about how, when, and where you should move. We must never try to get ahead of the Holy Spirit. Doing so is a big mistake.

    Abraham is the Father of our believing. He was fully-persuaded that God would keep and perform His promises. Abraham made a few mistakes, but his life really took off when he began to understand that he couldn’t make a move unless Heavenly Father told him to make it first. James 2:22-24(NLT) sums it up beautifully for us. Regarding Abraham, this passage tells us, “22 You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. 23 And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. 24 So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.” This is the kind of uniformity of purpose that God demands. It comes from being attentive to His voice and listening for His directives, for He is sure to give them. Abraham heard the directive from God, then moved in faith. This is the only successful pattern for a believer.

    Many of us are thrilled about the possibility of getting married, but are you equally thrilled about listening for God’s directives and actually receiving them from Him? Are you thrilled about your faith in God? You should be, because it is the most exciting journey we can imagine. Faith in God through Jesus Christ is where the action is. When we are in harmony with God’s plan for our lives, we can be confidently guided through the Holy Spirit and walk in faith. God doesn’t miss a beat, not ever! He hasn’t left one tiny fraction of a detail to chance when it comes to your life. He just needs you to trust His plan and to allow Him to guide and direct you in it. ■

    Praying to Cross His Path

    For a single Christian woman that is praying to cross paths with her future husband, if you haven’t met him yet, then you’re still in the process of spiritual preparation. You still have the awesome privilege to continue receiving guidance and instruction from the Holy Spirit. He prepares you to be the wife that God wants you to be. Many single sisters in Christ have questioned this. They don’t understand why spiritual preparation is necessary for marriage, and if it is, why is it taking so long? Spiritual preparation consists of the steps we take through Jesus Christ to be strengthened in his faith, power, and ability. Jesus Christ teaches in Luke 12:48 that to whom much is given much is required. Heavenly Father has called each of us to be good stewards of His blessings, and we certainly can’t satisfy this if we lack the spiritual strength and maturity to get it done.

    Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV) says, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Diligently seeking God is required to receive His rewards. Anything less than what He requires will not do. Believers and unbelievers alike attempt to butt up against this truth, but it is unyielding. God has a plan for each of us. Age, background, status, or any other human standard doesn’t matter. The Will of God requires that our feet are firmly planted on the path to God’s purpose in order to receive His rewards. One of the ways we ensure we’re on this path is to examine and correct the actions we’re taking to make room for the husband we hope to meet.

    Don’t be a wanderer
    The children of Israel wandered around in circles in the desert for 40 years because they couldn’t get on board with having faith in God. Heavenly Father’s Word tells us that they were so indoctrinated with the mindset of their prior enslavement that they wouldn’t handle the task of changing their thought paradigm. The practice of wandering was more comfortable to them than the practice of reaching and stretching forth to newness. They refused to release old dead things, and therefore were ill-prepared with the spiritual strength to reach out and grab what God promised. It was their responsibility to prepare, and they refused to do it. Because of this refusal, those who would not change did not receive the promise.

    God is perfect, and so is His path and purpose. The plan He has for your life is a good plan, but it is in no way arbitrary or random. We can’t do whatever we want to do and expect that it fulfills our call. The question to ask is whether we have the humility to ask God what He requires us to do and whether we have the patience to wait for His answer. We can’t keep wandering, being inconsistent and vacillating back and forth in our obligation to the faith. God requires more of us, and we must seek Him and be guided by Him to achieve His purpose. Our spiritual growth in Christ is what’s most important to God, and He is going to require us to lean into Him in a greater way and to step outside our comfort zones to seek His purpose.

    Don’t misuse the gift
    1Corinthians 7:3-5 (NLT) says,“3 The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. 4 The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”

    We can think, say, and feel however we like on the subject of sexual intimacy, but God is the only One who can set the standard for how this aspect of marriage should be handled. Whether we want to admit it or not, corporately, we’re paying a hefty price for taking what God ordained for marriage and using it for quick pleasure with individuals that were never destined to be our spouses. Heavenly Father specifically tells us in 1Corinthians 7:4 that a woman has authority over her body. He commands that she give this authority to her husband, and the husband will do the same. In your quiet time, make a mental note of the individuals that were not your husband, yet you gave them this authority in the past. Forgive yourself for your errors in judgement, but most importantly, repent for misusing the gift of your incredible womanhood to appease someone who didn’t honor you the way Christ does.

    The husband that God has ordained for your destiny is worthy of the authority you are commanded by God to give him. Now is the time to honor your future husband, even though you may not have crossed his path. Make a commitment that you will not give to another what belongs to him alone.

    Marriage belongs to God, don’t try to take it
    Loneliness, isolation, unfulfilled desires and dreams, these are among the many things that can make us feel sad. Understand with all that you are that there is no cure for all that makes us sad outside of Jesus Christ. He is the answer and following him leads us to freedom in every area of our lives. All things have been placed under his feet, and this includes marriage. It doesn’t matter how many dating sites a single person has signed up for, if the person she meets isn’t aligned with God’s plan for her life, this person will not be the blessing she hopes he will be.

    Marriage belongs to God. It brings glory to Him or else He would not have sanctioned it. How much faith do you have in the institution of marriage that God has ordained, and how willing are you to change in order to have the kind of marriage God wants you to have? Jesus Christ is our example, and this example is not outdated in the least bit. The example of Christ is life for us, and we can only access the more than abundant life by living in and through him. Are you willing and able to offer another individual the love of Christ in such a way that they are inspired to keep him continually at the center of their lives? Even if you’re not quite there, you must be on your way. The spiritual disciplines you practice must be firmly anchored in your everyday life, so that you are not moved from Christ, no matter who loves you or who doesn’t.

    Make no mistake, God is more committed to preserve and protect you than you are to preserve and protect yourself. He knows that the wrong person can cause you dreadful harm and the right person can cause you tremendous good. Make sure you never attempt to take what belongs to God and make it your own. Don’t try to get ahead of the Holy Spirit, for that is always a reckless and futile endeavor. Focus on God by staying in His Word, praying often, and following the example of Christ. Heavenly Father knows how to bless us with marriage. He does it His way, and His way alone. Be dutiful to stay in your lane. Honor the privilege and responsibility to remain spiritually prepared for what God has in store. ■

    Consistent and Unwavering

    I don’t know if any of you have ever had a conversation with someone that is truly disappointed with life, but I have. I know a person that has lost everything in life that was important. This woman became jobless, then homeless and car-less, then her children were taken away. As a single mom, she struggled to hold it together for as long as she could, but her every turn was met with more trouble, and without a firm foundation of faith, she gave up. It never occurred to her that God has a plan for her life. She wrongly believed that He was punishing her for a reason she couldn’t understand. Her mind had become so entrenched in this negative way of believing, that she would not even attempt to trust God. Instead, she was bitter and grew comfortable with a mind and heart of doubt.

    Jesus Christ said of himself in Revelations 3:8 that when he opens a door for us, no one can close it. By the same working of his mighty power, we must also understand that the door he closes, no one can open. The door he has closed for us was the one to darkness, fear, and doubt. We must reconcile in our minds and hearts that if Christ has closed it, and he has, we have no business trying to open it. If we do, we will not like what we find.

    In the preceding verse, Revelations 3:7, our Lord and Master tells us that he is the One that is holy and true. He’s the perfect One, our high priest that makes intercession for us before the Father’s throne. Jesus Christ tells us that he holds the key of David. This key reveals his sovereignty as a King of a Kingdom that has no end. He is the ruler of the universe, and ultimately every knee will bow before him. Hebrews 7:26(NLT) tells us, “He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven.”

    Our Lord is holy and set apart. He deserves glory and honor. He accomplished for us what we could not accomplish for ourselves, and he is able to do in us what no other can. He simply asks that we trust him, that we surrender our doubt, fear, and worry, and give all our burdens to him. He tells us in Matthew 11:29(NLT), “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” This is who our loving Savior is. Compassion and caring are his nature. To meet him at this humble place of surrender, our faith is required.

    When our desires and the blessings we expect in life are delayed or destroyed, some people will wall themselves off from having faith in Jesus Christ. This is extremely detrimental. It keeps our faith stagnant; it can plant seeds of arrogance in our hearts, and it conveys that we have a sense of entitlement rather than gratitude. Trouble comes from the devil, but it doesn’t last always. Trouble can be incredibly uncomfortable, but it is also a sign that promotion is near. It is an indicator that we must grow spiritually to achieve the level of maturity that God is calling us to. So, the question isn’t so much about how long trouble will last. The question that we should be asking is how we can get to the door that Jesus Christ has opened for us.

    Human beings are not that complicated, and life can be very simple when we put it in the context of God’s Word. There are only two lanes we can travel in life, one inside the Will of God and the other, outside of it. Jesus Christ said in Mark 3:35(NLT) “Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Furthermore, God tell us in Romans 12:2 that we must not be conformed to the culture and traditions of this world, but instead we are to be transformed by changing the way we think, then we will prove God’s Will. Often in life, our problems are on repeat because we haven’t lined up our thinking to the mind of Christ, so we lack the faith to prove God’s perfect Will. Our thinking patterns need to be changed, but we’re too stubborn to do it. We won’t ask God what we need to change, we won’t listen to His answer, and some of us have no intention of actually changing our ways.

    God is in the blessing business. 2Chronicles 16:9 says that His eyes search to and fro throughout the whole earth. He is looking for people who have hearts that are committed to Him, because this is the kind of heart that allows the strength of His power to do the miraculous. We don’t have to be perfect, but we must be consistent in our humility towards God, and we must have a desire to grow in an unwavering faith in Him. It’s not about all the things we want. It’s about trusting in God’s goodness and having confidence that He cannot fail. We know that the devil will throw many darts, but we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ, and God has well equipped us to handle any trick or plot. It is not nearly as complicated as we make it. When we humble ourselves in faith and thankfulness, we’ll see that the door has already been opened for us by Christ, and all we have to do is walk through it.■

    Remember, God is Watching

    Why do two people decide to get married? I will venture to say that most of us will choose to utter those profound two little words, “I Do!”, because we believe we’ve met someone we don’t want to live without. Our wise mothers and grandmothers will school us on this topic. They will tell us that saying the words “I Do!” is the easiest part about marriage. They’d want us to realize that the decision regarding who we choose to walk with us through life is one we must be very careful about making. We don’t always understand that the person to whom we say those two little words will change, and so will we. Only God knows how and the extent to which we both will change. And Most importantly, only the Lord knows if we have actually chosen someone that is in our best interest, someone that He wants us to unite with. This piece of knowledge should make us see that we need God’s help, and we should seek it way before we begin planning that walk down the aisle.

    Jesus Christ said in Matthew 16:19(NLT), “And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” All of us should realize that the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven are no small thing. This is a huge gift the Master has given us. In this verse, Jesus Christ tells us a little bit about these keys. He tells us that they both lock up and unlock some doors. He’s placed these powerful keys in our hands. This means that we decide which doors they will unlock and lock. We need look no further than our own lives to recognize that if we want to unlock a wrong door, the Lord will allow it. He placed the keys in our hands, and He will not take them back. But if we are patient and seek Him diligently, He will show us the right doors to open as well as those that need to remain locked.

    You might be asking, “Well what’s the point of giving me the keys if I have to go through all this work of finding the right door? Why doesn’t God do this for me?” God has given us the gift of free-will. How we use it is up to us, but His greatest hope is that we will partner with Him in everything that we do. 1John 4:8 tells us that God is love. As we study His Word, we learn that His love never fails, and God’s love doesn’t restrict our choices. Just as He didn’t remove the tree of the knowledge of good and evil from the Garden of Eden, He doesn’t hinder, remove, or alter our ability to make our own choices. Love gives freedom, and we decide what we will do, who we will be, and how we will respond to the enormous gifts that God has given us.

    We decide the degree to which we will honor God with our choices. We choose whether we will trust in His Word, be led of His Spirit, and lean not on our own understanding, or we can make choices based on our own agendas. It’s up to us, but we will never get away from the reality that responsibility and accountability will always come with freedom.

    Galatians 3:22(NLT) tells us, “But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ.” Believing and trusting God is a choice, and He’s placed us here on this earth to make it. Sin will always be a trap that satan lays for the believer. Freedom is what we have in Christ when we believe with everything in us that choosing God’s love is always the best choice. Choosing God’s love is freedom! And therein lies the reality of free-will choice. Our choice to do what pleases God backs up our faith. James 2:26 tells us that faith without works is dead. Making the decision to commit ourselves to please God demonstrates our faith in His Word, and this faith will bring into fruition the promise of all He has for us.

    2Chronicles 16:9 tells us that the eyes of the Lord search the whole earth. What is He searching for? He’s searching to find those who have a heart that is fully committed to Him. He has made it clear in His Word that we don’t have to be perfect to have a heart that is fully committed to God, but we must be humble before Him. We must be committed to surrender to His sovereignty. So, God is watching us. He is looking to see what we do with this extraordinary gift of free-will choice. He’s looking at what we do with the responsibility that comes with it.

    From the very beginning, in the Book of Genesis, God told us about the first couple. He chose the union of marriage between a man and a woman to begin our understanding of His plan. This shows us that one of the most important responsibilities of free-will choice is caring for another person’s heart. 1John 3:18(NLT) says, “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” So many of us are complaining about the wait, but we must remember that God is watching. Your willingness to patiently endure, to grow in Christ and increase your faith means that you understand the heft of what you’re asking for. Thank God that Christ has given you the keys, now let the Lord lead you to the right door.■

    When You Least Expect It, It Shows Up

    How many couples do you know that say they met their husband or wife at a time in their lives when they weren’t expecting it? I’ve heard it said many times. Some would argue that it doesn’t matter if a person is looking for love or not. What matters is that when they find love, they are able to keep it. There’s some merit in that school of thought as well, but we can’t overlook the reality that when we have stepped away from being consumed with finding love, love finds us. At some point it has to dawn on us that there’s a spiritual principle in the notion of meeting someone when our attention isn’t on it. This principle shows us that there’s more to meeting the right person than what we’ve thought, and it reveals most assuredly that what’s going on in our hearts and minds plays a very important part.

    Jeremiah 17:7-8(NLT) gives us the basis for understanding how important the mind and heart are when it comes to proving our faith in God. It says, “7 But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. 8 They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” At the time God delivered these words to those living in Old Testament times, the sins of His people were notoriously disobedient. They had evil in their hearts, so much so that they made evil a part of their worship. They were so entrenched in their own kind of righteousness that they could no longer see their evil for what it was. It could be said that the women had turned their eyes and hearts from God and worshiped their men instead. They looked upon men as though they were their everything.

    The same could be said of the men. They looked to their human rulers for leadership and guidance, and they totally abandoned the ways of God. Heavenly Father said in Jeremiah 17:5(NLT), “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD.” Because of the idolatrous practices of His people, God told them that the wonderful blessing He had reserved for them would slip through their hands. God had blessed His people with great wealth and prosperity, but instead of being thankful and more sincere in their worship, they became self-righteous and were blind to the true righteousness of God. The same can be said about many of us.

    The luxury of modern living that we’ve been so blessed to experience has blinded our eyes. We can’t see the extent to which we’ve turned from God and began to depend on people and the systems they maneuver to make life more convenient. When we operate this way, the blessings we want most can potentially slip through our hands, and like God’s people living in earlier biblical times, we’re blinded to how far our minds and hearts have turned from God. If there’s even the slightest, most remote possibility that this has happened to you, don’t delay. Offer God your most sincere and deepest apology and repent. It doesn’t matter if you don’t think you’ve done anything wrong. Our hearts can and do deceive us. Our circumstances will tell the story about where our hearts are, and what we’re harboring in them. As challenging as it can be, we must acknowledge our errors and repent so that our blessings are no longer blocked.

    Heavenly Father rebuked those that had refused to acknowledge that all blessings come from Him. Then, in Jeremiah 17:7-8, He gave this wonderful blessed Word to those that placed their trust in Him. He said they had made HIM their hope and confidence. What does it mean to make God our hope and confidence? It means that we have emptied ourselves of all other negative thoughts, especially those that might be idolatrous, and the only thing remaining in our hearts and minds is our hope and confidence in God. Those who received His blessing had honored Him with their faith, and this is what He saw when He looked upon them; He saw their faith. He saw them as trees that were planted by the river.

    When something is planted and rooted in the ground, it doesn’t move from one place to the next. It stays put and is totally dependent on the Creator for everything it needs. Like a tree that is continually nourished by the river’s water, we are totally dependent on God for everything. He has all power in His hands, and He has incredible love for us all, yet many of us love sin more than we love being committed to Him. Jeremiah was God’s mouthpiece, and he delivered harsh words to God’s people because they had strayed from Heavenly Father. It broke Jeremiah’s heart to speak to them that way, but it had to be done. The people called him a traitor because they didn’t want to hear the truth.

    It is the same with many of us. We only want to hear words that tickle our ears, but we will not witness the mighty power of God if we refuse to hear His truth. Ephesians 3:20(NIV) declares, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” God is able and willing to do infinitely above anything we can imagine, but the buck stops with us. He moves according to our willingness to allow His Spirit to be at work within us. The Spirit moves where God’s Word is honored and believed. If we truly understand this, we can see why the most marvelous things can happen when we least expect them. When our confidence is anchored in God, we go on about our Father’s business, and stop worrying about things He has promised to provide.

    We must remember that our sins are not forgotten until they are forgiven. Repentance comes with a heart that is humble and eager to please God and change from those things that don’t please Him. If we are ever unsure about our sin, we need only ask God for a revelation of it. He will reveal how we’ve grieved the Holy Spirit through our wrong actions. We must be ever so careful that our hearts are right with God, and that we’re not putting anything ahead of our relationship with Him. In Genesis 15:1, God came to Abraham in a vision and said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Abraham, I am your shield and I will protect you. I am your exceeding great reward.” Oh, how important this is for us to know. God is the Great I Am! He is our exceeding great reward! If this is how we truly feel about our God, we will have proven our commitment to Him. When we have made God our hope and confidence by living by the example of Christ, not only will He bless us when we least expect it, but He will make sure we are ready for the blessing He will present.■
